When it comes to sports, you will find that here are a lot of different levels to play at. You can play at school level, university sports level, semi-pro level or pro level. All of these levels will attract different amounts of attention.
How it all typically works is that when you are playing sports at school level you will have the university sports talent scouts watching players that show promise. These players will often be offered bursaries or scholarships if they will continue playing the sport should they accept the offer. This is how the universities try to get the best players into their various sports teams.
Your semi-pro and pro talents scouts will then watch the promising players that are playing student games. If the player continues to show promise they may find that they are offered a place in a national or regional team when they graduate, sometimes even before they graduate. Being offered a spot in a pro team for any sport is many an athlete's dream. It is often why they keep playing the sport they have chosen in the first place.
Another difference between playing sports at school and university level is the amount of coverage the games get. The school games will mostly be covered in the local newspaper and perhaps mentioned on the radio station. Student games are sometimes televised. This is because of the important part university sports play in the nations sporting teams.
Those athletes who are chosen for university teams will find that the atmosphere on the sports field is a lot more intense as a result of the talent scouts and the focus being placed on the student games. Some of them reel in this pressure, others crack. It all depends on the individual.
Playing sports at any level in most countries is a part of a filtering process. The aim is to try to get the best players into the national or regional teams.
The vast number of high school players are filtered into university teams. The university teams are filtered into the semi-pro teams and those are filtered into the pro teams.
So you must know, if you are playing university sports, you are on your way to a potential semi-pro or pro career in your sport.
