If you're buying your first keyboard there are some things you must know before making your final purchase. Even if you've owned a keyboard before, it's better to research as much as possible and consider a wide amount of information. You'll have a better idea of what you want and need, but you can never know too much.

Perhaps when looking through a glass window keyboards look a lot alike, but you'll need to touch and listen to each one to discern its quality. To begin with, really inexpensive keyboards have light keys, and they aren't very sensitive to the touch. When keyboards start getting nicer, and progressively more expensive, each key will have much greater response. If you play a quiet, mellow piece you want a keyboard that can translate your touch into sound. High quality keyboards feel more like a piano than entry-level keyboards.

The other huge consideration of course is the sound. Even beginner level keyboards offer a wide variety of sounds, but higher end models have more authentic synthesizers that sound closer to the instruments. Whether it's a church organ, different type of grand pianos, or even a harpsichord, nicer keyboards go beyond offering a wide range of instruments as mere novelty. It's necessary to really listen to the different synths available. It's not just about deciding which keyboard sounds best when you turn it on, but what series of sounds the keyboard offers you like most.

Perhaps counter-intuitively, if you see too many offerings that seem too good to be true at a certain price point, the odds are they are of a low quality. It's better to have a keyboard that does a few things very well than one that has lots of bells and whistles. At the higher end, you need a keyboard that offers MIDI, and you'll probably want all eighty eight keys.

If you're starting out and the so called bells and whistles (drum machines, track recorders, built in songs and sound effects) intrigue you, or just seem like they'll be fun, then it's the keyboard for you. You may not be at the stage where you need a professional instrument. Entry level keyboards are still quality instruments that are perfect to learn on. Even once you become proficient on the instrument, they're fun! The important thing is to appreciate the differences between this level of instrument and the ones above. Then you can decide which one best suits your needs.

The main thing is to do some basic research on keyboards and not get distracted by external features that you don't really need. Find out what's out there, decide what you need, and experiment with a few models in the same price point. Like with any instrument, really play and listen to each model you're considering a lot, and go with a friend who plays for their input. It's always helpful to have a trusted, informative voice with you.
