With recent advances in technology keyboards have become increasingly important. Basically, keyboards aren't only for people who play piano or have any interest in music theory: to make beats and songs on the computer, knowing your way around a keyboard is nearly essential. It's for music making in general, not just piano. While other instruments can be plugged into computers, keyboard remains the quintessential instrument for composing modern music with computers, and it's not about to change. Here are some essential things to keep in mind when you're buying a keyboard to be used in conjunction with your computer.

Perhaps the most essential thing is the feel of the keys. They need to be a certain weight and be able to give you the right response. Since the amount of synths you can play through the keyboard is essentially infinite, all your instruments will be controlled by the keyboard, so it's important that you feel comfortable with the keys. The same is true if the keyboard you're using has pads for percussion. Some keyboards do, some don't, but not all pads are equal in terms of responsiveness. The main thing is you can't just read the features of the keyboard of from a list and buy based on that. You need to feel the thing out and make sure it's agreeable. When you're doing samples you need a keyboard with nuanced feel!

The amount of keys offered is important because it represents the range of every instrument in the synth. Yes, you can program it to be a higher or lower range, but it means you can't switch seamlessly back and forth. While you may not need a full eighty eight, there's something to be said for having more than less. The amount of drum pads is a very similar consideration. It's good to have a pad for each of the basic components of a drum kit at least, but having more is very helpful when you want to make a more involved beat.

Practical concerns will depend on whether you plan on keeping it in one place, like a bedroom, living room or studio, or whether you require a more portable instrument to bring to jams or performances. The right size for you will likely take into account a balance between its potential for sound versus its physical attributes. If you need to decide between these two, people usually err on the side of favouring musical attributes instead of portability.

Of course you should consider what the m-audio keyboards can do on its own without the aid of a computer. After playing around with the keys so much, on whatever synth you're favouring, you may discover you accidentally learned how to play piano! Even without connecting it to the computer many keyboards have a wide variety of samples and synths at hand, and even built in recording features.

Take all this into account and you're sure to have a wonderful instrument you'll enjoy for years to come.
