I have always had an aptitude for golf, the natural mechanics, hand-eye co-ordination and the strength to own a powerful consistent swing pretty much from the start. Of course I have worked hard on my swing, my physique and my golf game over the years, always trying to improve and better myself. Proud to say I own a powerful, solid golf swing.
When I first started the game, there were a few top tour playing professionals out there that I mimicked it some way, these included the likes of Ernie Els, Nick Faldo and Nick Price. Later when the dynamic power and simplicity of Tiger Woods' golf swing burst onto the scene I took aspects from his philosophy especially the athletisism and his understanding of golf fitness and golf training. They all taught me certain lessons, and elements I incorporated into my game. This is a dangerous game to play mind you, they all are great players, but which of them has the most perfect swing?
The Perfect Golf swing... What is it, how to you do it and how do you train for it?
I get this question put to me very frequently, and my answer is the same:
We all posses our own personal perfect swing.
Tiger Woods for a promotional clinic a few years back was talking about the very same thing. Take a moment and picture a few of the PGA tour players right now. They all go about their business in very different ways. No different to the players I followed when starting out, they all had their own perfect golf swing; different tempo, ball flight, distance ability, strength with longer or shorter irons, and the part I am most interested in; golf fitness and how training techniques are applied to enhance swing mobility and power to suit their own game.
Many noted players follow specific golf fitness and golf training routines suited to their goals such as power, increased flexibility for golf, enhancing swing adjustments, fat loss perhaps, injuries, limitations, abilities and how athletic they have been previously and so on.
Adam Scott trains a lot more like an athlete;he uses heavier weights, more complicated routines that require adaptive responses with higher intensity compared to say Kenny Perry who still trains, but with less emphasis on athletic development, more geared towards mobility, and strength to continue playing. Jim Furyk is a strong believer in golf training, consistently follwing a structured golf fitness program, as he hopes to continue playing competitively on the PGA tour for many more years.
All of these Professionals have different physiques, different golf swings, different style of play and different golf fitness and training routines.
So next time you are stressing about obtaining perfection, attempt to stop yourself and remember that every swing has nuances, every body has it's own tendencies. Still, follow sound swing principles, and understand bio-mechanics, neural-muscular adaptations applicable for the golf swing, just do not beat yourself up about fitting into a mold.
If you look at a range line-up at a decent level amateur event or a minor golf tour event, you will notice most of the swings look very similar. These swings have been developed by textbook coaches instead of listening to internal cues to developing a personal swing and utilizing personal physical strengths and tendencies to an advantage.
Now take a look on the PGA tour, the top fifty or so, nearly all have very different swings, rhythms, and tempo. Take Jim Furyk for example mentioned earlier, his golf swing is far from textbook in many ways, in others it has fantastic rhythm, power and his ball striking abilities are renowned. The proof is in his playing record on the PGA. If he had been adjusted and forced to follow the traditional pack, most likely we never would have heard of Jim Furyk. He found his own perfect swing.
Follow principles on the course, on the range and when training for golf. Allow your own personality to come through as this will ensure a greater chance of developing an athletic golf physique and a great golf game that you trust and does not feel foreign to you. I learned from my peers, but added my stamp on my swing and style of play. Not from a textbook.
Let me know if you have ever fallen into the trap of believing in and pursuing a perfect golf swing. I know I did once...
