Would you buy a house without finding out whether the roof leaked, or there was rampant rising damp? No. So it beggars belief that a lot of people put their health at risk by not asking the right questions before undergoing cosmetic surgery. In this article, we look at the questions you should be asking before you agree to any surgery and how you can make yourself as informed as possible.

Qualifications. Before you make any decision you should always ensure that you have carried out a thorough background check of the surgeon who will be performing your surgery. Is s/he a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) or British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS)? Is s/he registered on the General Medical Council's specialist register for plastic surgery? Does s/he hold a position within the NHS?

Before and After

You should never feel obliged to accept the credentials of a surgeon on paper, but you should always ask to see a variety of before and after photos of patients that your surgeon has treated. In particular, you should make sure you are able to look at the results on other patients of the procedure you intend to have. You should also enquire about the surgeon's success rate. If there is any objection to providing this information, you should prioritise your health and consult another practice.

At the Consultation

First of all, any consultation should be between you and the surgeon who will be performing the cosmetic surgery. If you are given a 'patient advisor' or nurse to talk to, request that you speak directly with the surgeon.

If it helps you, take a list of prepared questions to ask your surgeon. Any experienced and ethical medical professional will expect and be happy to answer your questions. If you do not receive a satisfactory answer, you should ask the question again; enquire why they cannot provide you with a good enough response; or approach another clinic.

Ultimately, your consultant's top priority should be your care and wellbeing. The vast majority of surgeons are legitimate and honest, and by the same token you should ensure you provide them with the necessary information for them to be able to make as informed a decision as possible about your care. Therefore, you always ensure that you report any underlying medical conditions, medication currently being taken, and any concerns you may have. Similarly, if you suffer from any allergies or are undergoing allergy treatment, ensure that you make your surgeon aware as early as possible.

During the consultation, the surgeon should also explain the risks associated with the surgery you intend to undergo. Whilst there is always a risk when having an operation, the rate of complication for most cosmetic procedures is generally low. However, this does not mean that complications cannot arise, and therefore understanding the full situation will give you a more complete overview when making your final decision.
