In this day and age, looks matter. Deciding to undergo facial surgery is a big commitment financially, so it pays to make sure you understand the details of any procedure before you go under the knife. In this article, we look at what's involved in the procedure, and offer you five tips for a speedy recovery.
The Procedure
Face lift surgery can take up to six hours to complete, although it does depend what surgery you are having carried out. In this article, we are focussed on full facelifts, which covers the whole face. Tightening the skin on your face and neck from your eyes and ears downwards, a full face lift is usually started by making a surgical cut in the hairline, which leads past the front of the ears and then follows round the hairline to the back of the ears. Should you require a jawline lift, the surgeon may also make an incision under the chin. Most patients are given local anaesthesia together with a sedative, so that they remain awake during the procedure. However, some surgeons may use general anaesthesia to put the patient to sleep.
With the cuts made to the skin, it is carefully pulled back from the tissue. The surgeon will then tighten the muscles or surrounding tissue in the face and then relay the skin, removing any extra skin as a result of the lift. Once the skin is in the desired position, it is sewed back to the line where the cut was originally made.
Tips
1. Rest, rest, rest
It can take at least two weeks to recover from face lift surgery, so be prepared to take things at a slow pace.
2. Don't be alarmed
When you wake up, you will probably have a gauze dressing covering your eyes. This is normal, and is to reduce swelling. Your vision will also appear distorted for a couple of days after surgery due to the medication that was placed on your eyes during the surgery.
3. Don't lie down
For the first couple of days after surgery it is best to sleep in a semi-reclined position. Keeping your upper body and head above your heart reduces swelling and aching in the face and eyes.
4. Check your existing medication
If you are already taking medication, check with your doctor to see if this affect the painkillers they will prescribe for you.
5. Don't smoke!
Always a good thing, but specifically during the first 4 weeks post-surgery it is important to not smoke as this can cause lasting damage to your facial surgery.
