There was a time when the only way of treating the pain caused by kidney stones was by visiting a hospital. But today and despite the pain that it can cause, modern treatments can be carried out safely and quickly within a day case setting.
The causes of kidney stones are widespread, but generally there five areas which can have an effect. Chiefly, these are gender, age, diet, lifestyle, and the amount of fluid a person takes in on a regular basis. Typically, kidney stones are more prevalent in men and usually occur when a person is between the age of 25 and 45. In order to safeguard oneself against developing stones, a healthy diet and a good intake of water, together with an active lifestyle can significantly reduce the chances of developing kidney stones. Below, we have listed some of the procedures available to treat kidney stones, should you be unfortunate enough to develop them.
Surgery
Surgery should always be a last option when thinking about treating kidney stones, as it involves making an incision in the kidney, and is therefore quite invasive. Typically, it also requires a fairly long recovery period.
Extra corporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL)
"Lithotripsy" is also known as kidney stone shockwave treatment, and does not require surgical intervention. It works by sending shockwaves through the body to the kidney stones, where they are then broken down into smaller particles which allows them to be excreted from the body. Recovery is typically a few days, but it can be a painful option and can also cause bruising, as well as temporary blood in the urine.
Kidney Stone Laser Treatment
KSL is a treatment which is used when kidney stones have already begun to travel out of the body but become lodged in the bladder. While it does cause some pain, the recovery period is quite quick. The procedure itself involves the insertion of an ureteroscope into the bladder which then shoots a laser beam into the stone which shatters it.
Natural and Homeopathic Treatment
There are many ways of preventing the occurrence of kidney stones and similarly removing them without surgical or technical procedures. In particular, the most tried and tested method is to use acids such as citric or phosphoric acids from lemon and orange juice mixed with soda to dissolve the kidney stones.
Whatever option you decide to pursue, you should always bear in the mind the length of recovery afterwards and whether the method of kidney stone treatment is right for you.
