If you happen to have a tomato plant you must trim it religiously. By not pruning your tomato plant you are ensuring that only a couple of tomato fruits will develop. Thank goodness, pruning tomatoes is rather easy once you know the procedures.

First of all, you must know what things to trim. You will have to trim the leaves and the suckers. You are also able to trim alternate branches on the tomato plant to increase your tomato plant's yield.

The suckers on a tomato plant are smaller branches that will develop at the junction of the stalk and existing branches. If the suckers are permitted to grow toobig and strong they will become yet another branch on the plant. I know what you're thinking, more branches translates to more fruit! Alright! Well, that's probably not true, let me explain.

Tomato plants usually tend to produce tomatoes on every alternate branch, consequently two different suckers will have to develop and one of them will develop fruit. So then why do we not allow the tomato plant produce loads of suckers so that we can harvest more tomatoes? The simple reason why we can not permit a tomato plant grow in that way is because it only generates a limited quantity of energy and with each and every new sucker the energy splits. Leaving a reduced amount of energy for the developing fruit. It is usually advisable to have one principal tomato stalk which gets all of the energy as opposed to several stalks that only receive a portion of the energy. Long story short, suckers must be removed before they grow too strong.

Additionally, a lot of the leaves can certainly be clipped simply because they too steal energy from tomato production. It makes sense if you think about it. The leaves on top capture almost all of the sunshine since the sun shines from above. Any leaf underneath the top layer is usually in the shade the majority of the day and does not assist with plant growth so we remove them. Truth be told, you only need roughly 5-10 leaves on top of the tomato plant so you may eliminate all other leaves. There is another benefit of leaf trimming apart from the energy savings. Almost all leaves that grow down to the soil are more vunerable to fungal infection because that's frequently where tomato plant illnesses start.

The Tomato Pruning Techniques The Pros Will Not Talk About

When cultivating their first tomato plant many people make a couple of blunders. First, they expect they only have to trim one time and then their job is done. In actual fact, trimming is a constant job that has to be carried out through the entire lifetime of the plant.

The other typical error is that beginners is using a knife or a pair of scissors to trim their tomatoes. Doing that will cause clean-cut, open injuries that need plenty of energy from the tomato plant to heal; energy which would have been used for fruit development. Preferably, pinch the leaves and suckers bewteen your index finger and thumb. By pinching, the tomato plant expends less energy to repair the injury.
