When a new model of a car is launched they are often seen on display in the most unlikely places.
It may be a family saloon car, a luxury car or a people carrier, but whatever the make and brand, dealers will find innovative places to show them off, including shop windows, indoor shopping centres, the reception areas of superstores and even in art galleries.
Two recent examples have been the launch of a luxury car that was shown off in the shop window display of a luxury department store in Knightsbridge, London, and another that was displayed in the upstairs of a London art gallery.
The cars themselves are often show-stoppers, but the even more show-stopping question is "how do they get them in there?"
Part of the impact of the display is that it seems to have appeared as if by magic, usually unseen by any passers by, so the utmost secrecy is often part of the specification for any company contracted to do the job.
Therefore the car will have been transported to the display location in special covered and secure transport. Car transport companies expert in precision delivery, the term used for this kind of delivery and installation job, have a range of equipment that enables them to fulfil their clients' requirements for secrecy while also making sure that the car is not in any way damaged or scratched in transit.
For the car that was unveiled in the upstairs art gallery the building's entire portico was screened off with black drapes to ensure the neighbours could not first see what was happening.
The car was laid on its side on a specially-designed trolley and rotated through 90 degrees to point nose forwards so that it could be manoeuvred between the pillars supporting the portico, up the entrance steps and through a pair of plate glass doors into the foyer. There was just 1.5 inches of clearance on either side.
Once inside the building it had to be taken along a narrow corridor, squeezed into a goods lift and then along another narrow corridor to its final location in the gallery.
Of course, at the end of the display period the whole process has to be carried out in reverse before the car is loaded back into and enclosed car transporter to be returned to the dealer's showroom.
This is not the only challenge a specialist car transport company can be asked to deal with.
In addition to moving concept cars, that are often made out of plasticine or other easily-damaged materials, again in secure covered transport, they are often asked to source particular models and vintage vehicles for film sets, both for promotional films but also for movies.
Sometimes the job will include deconstructing a car to display the inside, or coating it with a particular shell designed with specific logos, branding or colours for an advertisement. The car will then have to be returned to its previous condition once the job is over.
The specialist vehicle transport company therefore needs to have a fleet of appropriate, secure transport and a team of people skilled in precision driving and mechanics, as well as the special issues involved in manoeuvring them into some very surprising locations.
The process of getting the latest model of a car into an unusual display space like a shop window or the top floor of a store is usually secret, requires special skills and secure covered transport. By Ali Withers.
