Wherever the Olympic Games are held and one of the reasons that countries compete so fiercely for the opportunity to host the games is the potential business opportunities that are said to accompany the run-up to the event, the event itself and often also the period immediately afterwards.
Teams like to arrive early to both train and acclimatise and there will be teams accommodated in 600 locations around the UK for London 2012. Those areas most heavily committed within reach of London include the East of England, with 23 teams, the South East with 30 teams and the South West with 26 teams.
It is also expected that many people who are visiting the games from overseas will combine their visits with exploring more of the UK or use the opportunity to develop business relationships and this provides great opportunities for local businesses, especially those specialising in hospitality and catering.
Billed as the world's first sustainable games the emphasis is on minimising carbon footprint, healthy eating and also on capitalising on opportunities for businesses outside London.
Any hotel or restaurant that specialises in locally sourced produce and regional cuisine will be in a good position to attract visitors and no doubt many have already prepared to publicise these aspects.
Athletes are very careful about their diets but while they are in pre-games build-up and staying in other locations they will also be looking for places to explore in their leisure time, and this may well include an evening out at a local restaurant. There is always the possibility, also, that coaches or managers will want to inspect the premises beforehand.
In addition to advanced publicity there will be other, behind the scenes preparations to make sure that everything runs smoothly and visitors have the best possible experience and among many things this will include ensuring that any catering facilities are ultra clean and hygienic and in immaculate working order.
The last thing any business will want is the adverse publicity of any food-related contamination or illnesses.
Preparations, therefore, should include making sure all kitchen staff are up to speed with all the latest health and safety and food hygiene regulations and training and having a thorough kitchen clean carried out. No matter how rigorous the daily hygiene regime in a large commercial kitchen inevitably over time there is a build-up of particles and grease that have been absorbed into the steam and deposited in the hard-to-reach locations that exist in any kitchen.
This is arguably one occasion where cutting corners is not an option and using reputable commercial kitchen cleaning services should be considered.
Commercial kitchen cleaners will have specialised knowledge and training in the best methods to use, the right cleaning solutions for areas where food is being produced and the tools and equipment to do the job properly.
It is worth asking for a pre-clean meeting and inspection so that the company can advise on anything it spots that might need attention. Another objective pair of eyes in this situation may be cost effective in the long run and help to gain valuable reputation and business.
A country that is hosting the Olympic Games the events expects to reap business opportunities and not only in the immediate vicinity of the events. Preparation such as commercial kitchen cleaning services is essential to restaurants to attract visitors. By Ali Withers.
