Air quality in large buildings is becoming an ever more important issue as hygiene standards become stricter and also as the incidence of allergies rises.
In office and public buildings there is likely to be a considerable amount of ductwork installed to provide for ventilation, air conditioning and heating and there are several sets of regulations in the UK to ensure these are properly maintained and regularly cleaned to protect the health of the occupants as well as their safety from the risk of fires.
HSE guidance provides advice on approved codes of practice on frequency of cleaning and maintenance and EU regulations also state that Mechanical Ventilation Systems should be properly cleaned and maintained to ensure that they are kept clean and free from anything which may contaminate the air.
Dirt deposits can reduce the efficiency of heating and air conditioning system and eventually degrade the quality of the indoor air affecting the working environment and the comfort and health of staff and other users of the building.
Deposits in ductwork can build up and consist mostly of dust, but they also contain bacteria and the dust and deposits provide the ideal nutrients for bacteria to multiply. This can increase the risk of transmission of airborne infections as well as contributing to the conditions that can trigger allergic reactions.
Insurance companies also require documented evidence that the ductwork system is being maintained in good condition, particularly as part of fire prevention measures.
While organisations must comply with all these requirements they are naturally anxious to keep their costs under control and are not likely to want to spend more than necessary on ductwork maintenance and cleaning.
This makes it important to establish the condition of the interior of the ductwork and the levels of dust deposits inside them. A method of collecting this information is to have deposit thickness testing carried out regularly so that building managers can control deposits and monitor their build-up inside the system.
A significant build-up can also affect the efficiency of the system and add to the costs of the energy used to run it.
Ensuring that the deposit thickness test is carried out by contractors according to the HVCA TR/19 standards will provide a reliable guide to the condition of the ductwork and the speed with which deposits are building up and to the frequency of ductwork cleaning that may then be needed.
Using regular deposit thickness testing is a useful way of monitoring conditions inside ductwork and deciding on an appropriate programme of maintenance and cleaning.
Dust deposits in air duct systems can create an ideal environment for bacteria to breed in while also increasing the fire risk. Deposit thickness tests helps to determine how often ductwork needs to be cleaned. By Ali Withers.
