It's not hard to find headlines in newspapers, magazines and the web about the increasing importance of conserving energy and the many ways we can all do it. Of these solar panel installation, alongside home wind power generation, is by far one of the more popular homeowner means of saving energy. Solar energy has proven to be an easy, affordable, and sustainable way to generate the clean electricity needed to run modern homes.

Solar panels, technically known as photovoltaic cells, capture the sun's energy and convert it into electrical current which is then stored in batteries to supply your home's energy needs. Using solar panels greatly lowers the carbon footprint your home produces and will minimize your electricity costs. Not only is solar energy always renewable, but it is also extremely easy to plan and affordable to install. Might as well be kind to your pocket as you are being kind to the environment.

How much does it cost to set up solar panels?

Ready-made solar panel systems typically retail for around $9,000 to $15,000 for a 2,000 square foot house and can be much higher for larger homes...Ouch, as I am sure you will agree pretty expensive! This cost is beyond the means of the average family and usually it's where the ball drops for most families. Thus the dreams of many for self sufficient, green powered homes are squashed before they start. The good news though is the rising awareness about global warming and ever increasing energy costs has created many good and affordable solutions for low cost and easy do-it-yourself home solar energy generation.

One of the best places to find cheap and easy solar panel kits and guides is on the internet! Several websites offer downloads of step by step A to Z instructions for the construction, installation and maintenance of complete home and small business solar energy systems.

Not only will using solar power save you money and quickly pay for itself, but most major utility companies are required to accept and pay for any surplus energy you send to the grid thereby reducing your costs even more! There are also many tax breaks and green incentives to add even more to your savings. As a final note, it is very important to find out whether or not your city requires a site inspection and permit for solar panel installations. So step one of your journey towards green off-grid living is to call your local city government office.
