As far as most people are concerned there are basically two different types of bracelets and those are gold and silver bracelets. While that is basically correct, there are actually several different types of both gold and what appears to be silver in charm bracelets. Knowing the different metal available will help you make a decision on which is right for you based on budget, style and preferences.

While historically yellow gold charm bracelets have been the tradition, this is certainly not the case anymore. Generally it can be traced back to the ancient Pharaohs of Egypt, making them the true original charm bracelets. Bracelets can be several different types from 10k all the way up to 18k. The higher karat number the more actual gold is in the metal, resulting in a richer color but also a slightly softer surface which may lead to more scratching and damage with daily wear.

Higher karat ratings on the gold charm bracelets also mean that the 18k styles are more expensive than the 14k or the 10k, although this also depends on size, weight and style. Many women choose from the 18k charm bracelets for evening wear and have a 10k or 14k for daily wear.

Another option from yellow gold is to go with white gold charm bracelets. White gold is durable, brilliant yet has a natural softer glow. White gold charms are becoming more popular but are still not as common as yellow gold or sterling silver. White gold tends to be more costly than yellow gold bracelets for the same types of designs.

Combining white and yellow gold on charm bracelets results in a very versatile two tone bracelet. Yellow gold can also be combined with sterling silver for the same effect at a slightly lower cost. Two tone bracelets can have different strands of metals on the bracelet or the links can alternate between white and yellow gold colors.

For the most expensive yet also the most durable types of charm bracelets look towards those made of platinum. Made of a naturally strong and stain resistant metal, platinum charm bracelets match well with white gold and sterling silver charms.

For most people, sterling silver charm bracelets are a great match for both evening and daily wear. These bracelets are very resistant to staining and damage but will need an occasional cleaning to stay brilliant and shiny. Silver is easily cleaned with soap and water or a jeweler's cloth when necessary.

Jewelry, particularly charm bracelets, needs to be made with both beauty and wear-ability in mind. Buying the most expensive metal may not be possible, but look for good quality and workmanship in the bracelet as well as the type of metal used. Charm bracelets from reputable manufacturers are always the best option but be sure to shop around and find just the bracelet that you want.
