According to Declan Treacy's book, "Clear Your Desk!", an average office worker in UK has a backlog of over 40 hours of paperwork at any one time, and he or she spends over 22 minutes each day looking for lost documents because the filing is not up to date.

A clear desk unleashes your creativity, job-satisfaction, and productivity. Lots of paperwork confines you and your abilities. Clearing up your desk is one of the best habits to have in today's overwhelming workspace. It is important to de-clutter your digital desk as well. Backing up the important files and emails is easier than ever. Individuals with cluttered desktop and inbox are stressed and over-worked. It is best to start off your day with clear desk and clean desktop.

An internal "clean your desk day" happens on last Friday of April every year. This day is dedicated to clearing clutter from your office. Using message pads, post-it notes, and sticky notes adds to the problem of cluttered desks. Work-area is filled with clutter and reminders when this practice is over-done. Post-it notes not only clutter your office-spaces. It also clutters your mind. This makes you feel burdened. When the information is centralized and organized, life becomes a lot easier and efficient.

Here are the three different kinds of clutter you can get rid off instantly to de-clutter your office.

1.) Holding on to old books impedes new ideas and new ways of thinking. Learn to let go the old books that you don't refer to on a day-to-day basis. Give them to local library.

2.) Clear out all the pens and other accessories that you don't use on a day to day basis. Do you really need a 6 hole binder on your desk if you don't use it regularly? Consider letting it go.

3.) Get rid of all the old files and folders that you don't use on a regular basis. Electronic files and old emails are the same way. Back them up using modern technology. Archieve them. But don't let them sit in front of you if you don't use it regularly.

4.) Prioritize your "action-items". Don't let the information age take over your life. Attain the skills of "selective ignorance"as described by Tim Ferris in his book "four hour work week".

All the successful entrepreneurs and business executives have one thing in common. They keep their offices and desk clean of clutter. This helps them think clearly, which ultimately helps them act decisively. Decisive action is the life-source of all successful people. It springs from de-cluttered spaces and clear mind.
