You are in a slump. You open the closet and door and your mind draws a blank. You see a lot of clothes yet you can find nothing to wear. This is the sign that it is time to clean that closet. It is not that you have nothing to wear it is just that the disorganization may just be a bit overwhelming. And there may be also a lot of items tucked up front that you just have no desire to wear. Below are a few tips on how to go about cleaning your closet and redefining you personal sense of style.

The first step to accomplishing such a huge task as this is to organize. Get several boxes or bins. Make them large enough to hold a lot of garments. Label each one as follows, things I love, things I hate, things I am not so sure about and the give away. Decide who will get the giveaway box and put their name on it. If it's the Salvation Army or Goodwill then write it on the bin. When sorting through the items ask yourself the following questions about each individual piece.

1. Does this garment flatter my body type?

2. Do I absolutely love it?

3. Does this garment give others the impression I want them to have?

If the answer is not yes to all three of these then it may not be put into the "keep" bin. The way you view your clothes is also important when setting up your closet. If you wear your work attire most often this should be in a place of prominence. Then the everyday wear and finally your stepping out togs. Some people hang their clothes by type and length. The object is to give the closet a more aesthetically pleasing look.

The type of hangers you choose will also affect the way your clothes hang on you as well as in the closet. Wire hangers are the absolute worse for sweaters and dresses. Invest in covered or wooden hangers as well as those special hangers for slacks. Buy shoe trees and do not be afraid to rid yourself of some of them as well. If you have not worn it in a year chances are great you never will. Get over of it and get rid of it. Now look at what you have left in your closets. This is the starting point a few well chosen new pieces may be all you need to create a new style and regain an enthusiasm for your wardrobe.
