Meditation is concentrating on a topic while Eastern meditation is considered as the reverse of concentrating on a topic. Here you must detach the subject from thought and images. You must allow open spaces in between to achieve a quiet mind. Eastern meditation is practiced in several techniques. The top 5 namely;

Transcendental Meditation
Yoga
Transformational Meditation
Guided Meditation
Guided prayer meditation

Transcendental Meditation:
This the most important and above all other forms of meditation practices. It involves belief that "The universe and I are one", it involves the power of positive thinking, eradicate the mind of past stress causes and focuses on one thought when trying to meditate.

Yoga: It has three major cultural branches and they are
Hindu Yoga
Buddhist Yoga
Jaina Yoga

Yoga is the exercise of getting the body into various positions with controlled breathing. You put the focus on breathing in and out while concentrating on an exercise. A successful yoga practice can reduce stress, enhance sleep, improving health, increasing lubrication of the joints, relieve headache and constipation, etc.

Transformational Meditation:
Here the mind becomes only a device used by a person so that the soul can go to inner spiritual levels until it comes in union with the Divine Being at free will. This process results into union with God so there is no difference between them. A person is said to have achieved Super-Cosmic consciousness (God consciousness) in this practice of meditation.

Guided Meditation:
This kind of meditation is simply done as an individual or group follows the procedures from a recorded voice of an instructor. This is mostly used by beginners in the practice of meditation.

Prayer Meditation:
The guides used in prayer meditation are:
Choose a holy word
Avoid every thought and feeling
If a thought returns, go back to the holy word
Practice until every thoughts and feelings are gone
Then you have achieved the level of pure consciousness which connects you directly with God.

Important reminders as you practice any meditation technique:
The mind wanders about when you try to meditate.
Accept any thought or feeling into your consciousness including disturbing ones (no exceptions).
Hold the feeling or thought in the mind without rejection or liking.
The thought will get away and you'll be free to proceed with your meditation practice.

These tips are vitally important because when meditating you aim to get beyond the mind and experience oneness with the universe.
