Of the numerous human efforts to replicate nature and introduce it into suburban surroundings where we dwell, indoor fountains are probably the closest to perfection. While the effort involved, the artistic bent of mind and skill of craftsmanship necessary are essentially human traits, the elements that are tapped into that give it a specific function and use are very much natural.

The predominant element of course, is water. Water's ability to absorb ambient noise and fill it with a tinkling that is constant yet pleasing to the ears is unique. Water also acts as a humidifier by adding moisture to the air around, when the fountain coverts it into mist. So despite air conditioning, you do not suffer from a dry nose or itchy eyes, and it feels like you are in the middle of a forest or garden, or in other words, outdoors.

But water, is only part of the success story of indoor fountains. The other half is the conduits used to channel it back and forth, up and down, or in any other artfully appointed direction. The materials of choice are wood, stone and metal. But so far as wood and metal are concerned, the most effective options are bamboo and copper. Bamboo is one of the best conduits of natural sound. Since it is essentially a reed, its hollow quality is a perfect conductor for sound, and, in skilled hands, this sound is magically transmuted into music. Indoor fountains that use hand carved bamboo act as wood chimes, where the source of sound in this case is not wind, but water. The soft notes of the hand carved bamboo are enhanced by the sweet tinkling of water, creating the ambience of a bamboo grove deep in a forest. You are instantly transported. Copper, on the other hand mimics the sound a stream makes on tiny pebbles as it flows down a lost valley. Among metals, it is also the most mystically appointed and ideal for 'Feng Shui' balancing of the home or office space. Of course, if you want to go closer to the real deal, then hand carved stone is your best bet.

No matter what you choose, indoor fountains are doorways to the outdoors. So what if you spend a huge portion of your life in a corporate workspace and your home is bang in the middle of a bustling metropolis? Just bring home the outdoors.

Amy C. enjoys creating calming indoor spaces using water fountains. She invites you to browse the beautiful and decorative collection of indoor fountains and most recently lanched collection of solar fountains for your garden and patio.
