Fabric damage can and does occur during the laundering process. Although we like to blame the machine, it is generally user error that causes the problems. You can get holes and tears even fraying if you aren't careful about how you first of all, prepare the clothes to be washed and second how you load and unload the appliance.
People sometimes forget that fabric ages just as does all other household items. Your favorite T-shirt from your college days will probably fall apart in the wash after 10 years. Items that are laundered frequently will show wear sooner that n items only worn once in a while.
The items that get exposed to chemicals like chlorine bleach will also fray or become thread bare in places. Did you know that such items as acne medications with benzoyl peroxide and certain hair care products can create enough fiber damage that holes will appear after washing? Over bleaching is one of the major causes of holes and tears in fabrics. There are things you can do to help alleviate the likelihood of this happening during your laundering experience.
1. Use chlorine bleach sparingly and when in use be careful to take the following precautions. If you have less than full loads use only a half cup of bleach. Add the bleach to the water and allow the agitation to begin before adding clothes, or dilute the bleach in 4 parts water before adding to the washing machine.
2. Sometimes it is neither the fault of the user or the appliance. It can be because the construction of the item was poor in the first place. Seems and hems can come undone in the laundering process when they have been very poorly made.
3. Overloading the machine and/or loading items that should be handled a bit more delicately into the machine with heavier items can also cause damage. That is why sorting clothes and washing delicates and knits separate from, oh let's just say jeans and corduroy. This will eliminate the chance for laces and knitted threads being caught and snagged on zippers and buttons.
4. Colors that bleed should never be included in the wash with other items. Also avoid putting these items in the same basket or dryer with other items.
5. While a lot of people are set on cold water washing it can also lead to damage. The warmer the water the temperature the greater the impact of the chemical reactions and the shorter the wash cycle that is needed. This limits the time the garment is exposed to the detergent and/or bleach. Colder water needs the longest cycles to achieve the same results.
6. Liquid detergents work better in cold water. Powders will get stuck, un-dissolved to fabrics because it is harder for the water to break it down.
7. Do not allow clothes to sit damp for long periods of time.
