Raised formal fountains are difficult to build and require high level of skill. They are very costly in terms of labor and material, and are difficult to maintain if not designed correctly. However, a well-designed and constructed raised fountain is very elegant in appearance and fits perfectly in the right setting.

Here are the top 5 mistakes to avoid when choosing a raised format fountain:

1. Start off with marking the designated area. Once it is marked out, excavate to below the frost line. If the base of the raised fountain is above the frost line, freezing temperatures could loosen the foundation and generate cracks and leaks.

2. Completely build the basin before applying the watertight coat. Plaster over the plumbing on the side of the walls so that no plumbing is visible.

3. Design the foundation so that it is relatively easy to remove and replace the pump.

4. Consider using a masonry waterproofing. If a liner is used instead of masonry waterproofing, consider using a bulkhead fitting that goes through the liner but is lightweight.

5. When the walls of the basin are of cementitious material, the basin will need to be filled and emptied multiple times to decrease the concentration of lime and create balanced pH level. This is because healthy pH levels will ensure the health of any fish or living organism that you plan to place in the formal fountain. Adding some diluted muriatic acid may expedite the process at the cost of weakening the cement.

6. Instead of using a drain controlled gate valve, consider using float valve allowing the pool to automatically top off when the water level falls.

7. Cement is not waterproof, so it is critical to ensure water retention using other methods like mixing of waterproof cement with marble dust. When cement is mixed with masonry water, the plaster that is created is very plastic. This extra plastic gives smooth, waterproof surface. Two coats must be applied to make this a totally water-retaining plaster.

Water fountains elevate your spirit. For centuries, curves water and ornamental details have been used to ease the restraining effect of symmetrical environment and make it more suitable and harmonious with the gardens and landscapes.

Raised formal fountains are structures of beauty. They are very royal and elegant in their looks and fits very well with symmetrically arranged gardens and outdoors. Nothing is as refreshing as sounds of water – the bubbling, splashing, trickling sounds of water are bound to refresh your spirit and bring joy and serenity to your life.
