In-ground fountains are work of art. They exude calmness and serenity. When designed and constructed correctly, they are simply eye-catching water features. Construction and placement of in-ground fountain is fairly easy as long as the symmetry is right.

Here are the top 5 things to consider when debating the placement and construction of an in-ground fountain:

1. Avoid placing it beneath trees, as it would need frequent cleaning. When deciding to put a fountain or pond under large shades, it is important to remember that doing so would limit the growth of water-plants. If you don’t have a choice, consider looking into low-light aquatic plants.

2. A slight slope is good, as it would give direction to the water flow. Slopes should be embraced as they create dramatic effect.

3. Do not place the in-ground water feature in a location that would have toxic chemicals. Any kinds of plants or fish are sensitive to chemicals or foreign materials falling into the fountain. Mainly watch for the rooftop, as it tends to dribble the foreign materials onto the in-ground water features.

4. Finally, consider the visual range of your water features placement. Consider the effect that you desire. Do you want the water feature to be visible from your living room or your bedroom? Do you want them to be by the entryway? Or do you want them to be placed in a quiet corner of your garden for meditation and contemplation? Consider these questions before placing the water feature.

5. Make sure that symmetry is perfect throughout all the stages of construction, from excavation to final finishing.

6. Too large of a waterfall may cause too much water noise for you and may get annoying in long term, and too small of a waterfall may not generate enough noise for your relaxation needs. In intimate areas mainly used for regular day-to-day purposes, it is best to have waterfall sound that is not too strong to overlap ongoing conversation. It is preferable to have water features that create the sounds of water that recedes in the background.

7. Integrate water features with its surroundings. A well-designed water features are totally subtle in appearance. If you choose to use river stones in your water feature, make sure they are also present in the vicinity of your water feature. Unify the plants around the water feature to create a natural transition from water garden into the landscape.

A natural water feature makes a wonderful complement to a suburban backyard. It transforms an ordinary backyard into a refreshing sanctuary filled with exotic plants and aquatic life.
