Believe it or not, the memory is something like a swimmer`s arm and leg muscles, not to mention her lungs. The more the swimmer works out in other ways, the better her swimming will get. This means that even if the swimmer goes for a five mile run in the morning or lifts weights, her swimming will improve. In fact, if she just concentrates on her swimming alone, her performance in the pool may suffer.
Your memory needs general workouts, just like the swimmer. Your brain needs frequent, repetitive use to keep in shape. If you just watch TV all evening, you`re missing an opportunity for brain fitness and development. The great thing is that brain exercise can really be fun.
Below are three brain exercises to start with. Of course it`s not enough to just learn about them. You have to put some energy into trying them out. We`re pretty certain you`ll see results in your study habits and your grades.
Be an Athlete for Your Brain. When you work out physically, you get mental growth as a benefit. If you sit around at a desk all day you miss out on the mental benefits that come from physical activity.
That means, if you go for a long cycle, your mental status improves each time you press the pedal. You`re sharper, you`re more alert, and your memory is boosted with better recall.
Why does this proven phenomenon take place? It`s not just jock fever. It`s hormones my friend. Physical exercise boosts two hormones, dopamine, and serotonin. Both these chemicals are involved in feel-good experiences and cause the mental improvements listed above.
So when you`re getting ready for Friday`s exam, consider taking an hour off to walk or run. Or play tennis with a friend. Just tell them you`re studying!
Puzzle It Out. The danger with puzzles, as you probably know, is that you can get hooked. But you probably did not know that puzzles are brain workouts. Puzzlers are actually improving their memory functions as they play.
People who play the crosswords, put jigsaws together, or struggle at Scrabble are continually honing their memory skills. If you begin to play at puzzles, you`ll find your ability to succeed academically my change.
It`s a puzzling phenomenon, but it works!
Booked into the Brain. When was the last time you read a good book? (Textbooks don`t count!) If it`s been awhile, get to the library and find one. It turns out that reading helps improve your memory functions. The benefit, of course, is better study habits and academic performance.
So find a good book, turn off the computer, and find a comfy place to enter an imaginary world. You`re not goofing off...you`re booked for better grades!
