Have you heard about those guys (savants) who can memorize the phone book? Or remember all the chemicals in the Periodic Table? Or who can cite scripture by chapter and verse?
Relax. You don't have to do that. But here is a couple of memorization approaches that actually help you retain information and call it up when you need it. They can actually improve your overall memory function too, and you don't have to be a genius to do them! You just have to put in some effort (no pain, no gain). These are study techniques that work.
Put Your Brain on Schedule! You can improve your grades by setting up a learning schedule for your brain. Yes, the human brain learns better if you alternate study periods with rest periods. The brain is actually working during the rest period—so you're not goofing off. Go ahead and get a soda out of the refrigerator. The brain uses the rest period to do some kind of mysterious organization. Once you learn how to schedule these periods, you'll be able to optimize your memorizations for tests—and better grades, of course.
Here's how to max out your memorization. First study your information (just a page or two) for half an hour. Then, take a break for five minutes. Study again for another half hour. Then break for an hour. Review the information for just 15 minutes this time. Continue the fifteen minute reviews for the next 24 hours.
By doing this, your brain does an interesting thing. Your short term memory is transformed into long term memory. You're good for that exam!
Write a Silly Story! Let's say your teacher gives you a list of 30 vocabulary words to learn for Friday. You have to know the definitions and spellings. You panic.
Not to worry! Use the words to write a story. Now, it'll probably be a silly story, but use the words in their correct meaning, and write down the story so that even your fingers will know the spelling. Read the story as often as you can (using the schedule above) and try to remember the words as you go. The story will help you recall the words.
Surprise! It will be much easier for you to remember the information, come quiz time. You'll be impressed at how well this memory technique works.
Memory function is a strange thing. Sometimes the goofiest things help.
