How do you know that you are already in love? Do you expect the birds to sing and a heavenly chorale to show up? Are you expecting butterflies in the stomach and a feeling of light-headedness?

In popular fiction, signs that a person is in-love tend to be exaggerated and melodramatic. Signs like fireworks exploding in the background, heart palpitations, loss of appetite, loss of sleep, blowing curtains, you get my drift, right? Well, if you are experiencing these things, sorry to say, you are not so much as in love as in lust. This is not entirely a bad thing either. But setting lust aside, let's take a look at some undeniable signs of being truly in-love with a person:

1. You are willing to explain to other people why you aren't dating any one else.

Well, apart from the nasty diseases that you can get by sleeping around, when you are truly in-love with a person, the idea of sleeping with someone else other than that person, is a lot less attractive than it used to be in the past. Actually, exclusivity is not the issue here. It is the willingness to explain to your bunch of teasing friends why are being exclusive. Men and women have this urge to always bring their playboy/playgirl image to the front. But once you are willing to say that you are going exclusive, and then explain as to WHY you are doing it, yet not minding the inevitable teasing that you will get from friends, then that's one sign that you are in-love with the person that you are with.

Actually, a lot of men and women are silently monogamous, not even telling their partners that they aren't seeing anyone other than them. Why? Because most of them feel that their willingness to not see anyone else, gives power to their partner. But once you are willing to admit that, and are willing to share that power and expose yourself to the vulnerability, then yes, not only are you in-love, but you are also on your way to sounding like a rational and fair adult.

2. You are willing to throw away the little black book (and the delete the little black database).

First, for those who don't understand what a "little black book is," it's slang for a dating address book.

Now that's out of the way, why is throwing away that little black book significant? It's a way of saying that you are exclusive and you plan to stay exclusive for a long time (even forever). It is like saying that none of the people on that book holds a candle next to your darling. Showing that you are burning that book gives proof that you are indeed serious, and gives proof to that reality. Also, the burning of that little black book signifies that you are willing to let go of your past loves, and that there's no looking back at them. So with that being said, your direction is only forward. With the beloved of yours.

And oh yeah, before you forget, it's not enough that you burn that little black book only, yet keep the matching database of it in your laptop. Er, no. You show that person that you love that you are going to delete that database too. And no, if you don't tell your beloved that you have that database and keep it a secret for yourself, then you are not only fooling your beloved, but you are also fooling yourself.

A commitment is a commitment, not only to the other, but also to yourself. If you are only pretending to throw away that little black book, then you are also only pretending to yourself that you are committed.

If you are old enough to want to be taken seriously by the person you love, then you are also old enough to take yourself seriously. Committed adults simply do not have the time for scheming games.
