If you are a single parent then most likely, you are hesitating on going to dates again because you know about the fact that dating doesn't just affect you, it also affects your children as well. But don't let this hinder you from dating and finding your partner in life again. Especially now that online dating has never become more efficient, practical, and successful too. This would be the perfect place for divorced or single parents like yourself. However, it will do you good if you also prepare yourself and your children for that event.

Here are some tips that as a single parent should read, understand and practice before you take up online dating:

1. Prioritize yourself first.

As a parent, we would understand your raised eyebrows on this. But you must know and perhaps accept that you would need to take care of yourself because this is the highest form of self-respect. This also reflects your personal boundaries. Before you start to protest and say that your children should be top priority, sit back and think about it. The people who invest effort, time, and energy to take care of themselves are also the same people who would spend the same amount of effort, time, and energy in taking care of others. And when you spend time taking care of yourself, this also means putting your personal relationships in order. Remember, before you can truly love and care for someone else, you have to start to love and care for yourself first. Because after all, if you can't even take care and love yourself, how can you even think about caring and loving another person, right? Make that commitment to prioritize yourself first before others. If you feel that you need to have a partner in life to ease your worries, then go ahead and do something about finding that person.

2. Make more friends!

When you join online dating, don't think "This person is a suitable date" or "This is a prospective date." Online dating doesn't only forge romantic relationships, but it can also encourage making friends online too. Do not limit yourself into seeking out dates online. Instead, establish friendships with different people. Take this offline too, and befriend the people that you've been eyeing to be friends with. It doesn't matter if they are members of the opposite sex or the same sex. What's important is that you form relationships that could enrich your life and your horizons.

Loving yourself and making new friends doesn't make you a bad parent. On the contrary, it helps make you a better one because you are trying to make yourself a better person. This better person that you will become would then be a better parent to the kids that you truly love.
