There have been Doctor Who toys and collectibles around nearly as long as there have been adventures for the famous Time Lord. Through the years there has been some very memorable Doctor Who toys and merchandise, such as the renowned 60s Dalek costumes for children, and a few that haven't been quite so great (the Dapol figures may come to mind). Fortunately, with the persistent huge popularity of Doctor Who toys, merchandise and DVDs, the phenomenon appears set to be around for a good long while yet.

This is great. I've personally adored Doctor Who for around twenty years, and was thrilled when it came back onto our television sets back in 2005. Certainly, there's been a few less than wonderful episodes since it returned, but these are very much in the minority. Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor brought the television series back in fine style, but it was the era of David Tennant's tenth Doctor that really saw the show take its place as a global phenomenon.

Doctor Who is larger right now (and much more respected) than it ever was throughout the original 1963-1989 run, and since it came back it has incorporated some of the best talent the British TV and cinema trade has to offer, both behind and in front of the camera. The series of Doctor Who toys at this time around is huge and suitably varied for enthusiasts young and old, who have a massive choice of games, toys, statues, posters and more to expand their collection with.

Plus, with the era of the eleventh Doctor all set to begin, ushering in Matt Smith in the lead role as our heroic Time Lord, everything will change again and a whole new array of Doctor Who toys and collectibles will be revealed, boasting the new logo, the new version of the Doctor, his new companion, the new version of the TARDIS and a new rogue's gallery of monsters and villains!

The phenomenonal return of Doctor Who took old fans by surprise, but it had been the sheer extent of its popularity that has stunned everyone even more. At this point there are Doctor Who toys, merchandise and collectibles around at all great stores and on all of the top sites on the net, and therefore the series will keep on growing and changing. The knowledge that the rickety old show that fans loved so much, and which had faded into obscurity, could come back and become the greatest thing on TV is wonderful. Just like the Doctor himself, Doctor Who toys and merchandise keeps on regenerating!

Andrew is a pop culture blogger, music journalist, SF author and long-term Doctor Who fan. Fans can find some amazing Doctor Who toys and collectibles in time for Christmas this year!
