Virtually everyone has concerns about some aspect of the appearance of their face. Many people may not ever encounter serious difficulties with other areas such as the upper arms, torso, legs or otherwise, or they could just think that these problems aren't all that significant, since they're covered under clothing, however, the face, as the most easily visible area of the body, is a cause for concern for just about everyone. Cosmetic issues involving the face, of course, can have causes unrelated to aging; many individuals are born with features which they would like to alter, whether or not they result in unpleasant attention. Large or misshapen noses, excess fat, or gaunt cheeks or lips are among the most common aesthetic concerns people have. Injury (especially to the nose), post-surgical scarring, and sun-related skin damage are among the other factors that can adversely affect the aesthetic condition of the face.

Other consequences can stem from this sort of self-consciousness regarding facial features. A lack of confidence is chief among these issues. The individual's social life is also likely to suffer. Even the career prospects of the individual can suffer. For these reasons and many others, a constantly growing number of people are receiving facial cosmetic surgery. The figures used in this article are published by the ASAPS (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery).

The face lift is perhaps the best known cosmetic surgical procedure for the face. Face lifts were performed over 132,000 times in the United States in 2008. Face lifts primarily target the skin and other underlying tissues of the face, which lose their elasticity over time due to the depletion of some naturally occurring chemicals, which subsequently results in loose, saggy-looking skin. Excess tissues are also sometimes excised as part of the face lift procedure, after which the remaining tissues are then tightened and lifted. Incisions are generally made along the natural folds of the skin, in places such as the skin under the chin. The resulting scarring is therefore nearly impossible to spot under normal circumstances. For patients who only require slight corrections, more targeted versions of the face lift are available. These include the upper, lower, and mid face lifts, which address the indicated areas of the face and may be more desirable for certain patients.

Rhinoplasty - surgical reshaping of the nose - is another well-known form of facial cosmetic surgery. More than 152,000 rhinoplasties were performed in the US in 2008. There are a number of reasons as to why a patient may consider a rhinoplasty: it could be for cosmetic reasons, including a reduction in the length or width of the nose, removing the hump from the upper bridge, repositioning the nose or altering its angle, or repairing crookedness. Additionally, rhino-plasty plastic surgery is also often performed on individuals who have difficulty breathing properly due to the shape of the bone or tissue structure structure of the nose or the septum.

While the name "blepharoplasty" may not be as well known as those of some other types of cosmetic surgery, this is actually the most popular type of facial cosmetic surgery, carried out more than 195,000 times in 2008 in the United States. Blepharoplasty literally means surgery to alter the shape of the eyelid. The eyelids play a major role in establishing the overall appearance of the face, and because of this they are considered a good area to target for improvement. Saggy eyelids and darkened bags below the eyelids, which occur in almost everyone sooner or later, are liable to make the individual appear to be more fatigued than he or she actually is, and therefore, younger-looking eyelids give the face as a whole a more energetic appearance. Within the field of blepharoplasty, there are several approaches and techniques in use. There's lower blepharoplasty, which works against the appearance of bags below the eyelids, and upper eyelid surgery, which can tighten the upper eyelid and rejuvenate the appearance of the eye area, along with correction of certain visual problems caused by drooping of the upper eyelid. Asian blepharoplasty, which adds an additional crease in the upper eyelid for patients of Asian descent, is another very popular operation. Each blepharoplasty procedure generally involves only small incisions, which are placed in the folds of the eyelids themselves, or at the lines of the eyelashes, resulting in negligible visible scarring.

All surgical procedures involve risks, and may not be appropriate for individuals with certain allergies or other medical conditions. Individuals need to be aware of the limits of realistic expectations in terms of alteration of physical features, and adhere to a strict recovery regimen after the procedure. Consult with a surgeon to determine whether facial cosmetic surgery is a good choice for you.
