If you're wondering what to use in your kitchen that's not only beautiful but sturdy and environmentally-friendly, a stunning solid oak kitchen plinth might be just what you are looking for! Getting hold of little DIY bits and bobs to re-model your kitchen or entire home is not as difficult as it used to be with the many pre-fabricated materials on the market today. A kitchen plinth is ideal for the do-it-yourself novice who wants to make their home more beautiful.

What Is A Kitchen Plinth?

A kitchen plinth is the base or platform upon which a structure such as a drawer or cabinet rests. If the base or plinth is weak, the structure - the cabinet or drawer - will have problems later. To ensure the steadiness of an oft-used structure such as a cabinet or drawer in the kitchen, it is necessary that its base be sturdy; and this is where we need the plinth. The rich tones and subtle wood grain of a solid oak plinth will also give a kitchen the warmth and character it needs. Your drawers, if they could express affection, would love you for providing them with this. You can purchase a solid oak plinth at many DIY stores, home improvement and garden centre retailers. For example, B&Q has a range of plinth from different manufacturers and also their own range called "it kitchens".

More Than Just A Plinth

Some people make use of the kitchen plinth space, under their main cupboards, to fit a discrete kitchen plinth heater, which is a great idea especially as there isn't often a great space to place a radiator in most kitchens. Another idea is to fit draws actually into the kitchen plinth space, which given more storage area and can be particularly useful in modest kitchens. Finally, you can add LED lighting to give subtle extra lighting to your kitchen for that contemporary look.

Take Careful Measurements

While it's not the case that your house will fall down if you get the wrong sized plinth, you should be aware that online stores will sell you a length of wood up to 2.4 metres in length, which is about 8 feet long, so if you only want a short section of plinth, don't order the wrong length at the checkout or you'll have acres of plinth left over! A better idea is to whip out a tape measure, work out what you need and order the appropriate length. Buying too much may not seem important, and it probably isn't if you get the cheap wood imitation, but if you're buying solid oak, you could leave a dent in your wallet if you buy excess!

Andrew writes for the Kitchen Plinth website where you can get great prices on a wonderful range of kitchen plinths.
