Today, doing business without the Internet is fast becoming impossible. Stretching over the globe, it has revolutionized the way the world interacts. But as important as websites are, their efficiency is dependent on the amount of visitors that comes their way. To this end, web developers and website owners are always in search of ways of attracting traffic. One of the ways of achieving this is by employing the use of web directory submissions.

As the name implies, web directories provide you with a means of registering your website with an online directory. Although their function is similar in a lot of ways, they are not the same as your regular search engines. Simply put search engines have to look for the information whilst web directories already have the information and site registered with them which is why web directories are so important. You gain the edge of needed advertisement which eventually results in increased visitors to your website.

Unsurprisingly, the more advertised you are with web directories, the more likely it is that your site will be visited. With new web directories being created everyday, finding web directories is hardly difficult. Deciding which directory to submit to will be determined by the site's recognition and web presence. Popular web directories include the Yahoo directory, MSN and Dmoz. If you are looking to start somewhere, then submitting at Dmoz (found at Dmoz.org) is a good place to start. Although, given the amount of directories out there you do not have to settle for only one!

It is possible to find web directories that offer free listings. The benefits of submitting with a web directory lies in the long term as well as short term gain. Their longevity ensures that you stay on them for a long stretch. As a result of this a site that might appear small right now can quickly grow to be a major player in the years to come.

Registering at web directories can be done in two ways. Manual submissions (which will require your input) or automatic submissions (which are achieved through the use of applied software). Depending on the application you settle on, it is possible to find as much as 700,000 links. The use of software is also beneficial in the advantage it gives you over the strain of manual submissions. This is why software submission has become by far the most popular choice amongst internet users. However, using software will still require some input from you as you navigate from directory to directory.
