The word is fast getting out and as a result increasingly more people are climbing onto the raw foods bandwagon, and discovering all the benefits it has to offer. For example if you have struggled with a weight problem you my be interested in knowing that it's not uncommon for people eating primarily raw foods to lose a pound a day up to their ideal weight goal. Then if you have chronic health issues, raw foods can also help to alleviate or completely eliminate them altogether.
Even so, it won't take you long to figure out that making the switch to raw foods does come at a price because fresh is always more expensive at your local grocery store. Fresh fruits, and vegetables are more expensive to ship and store than cooked, processed, prepackaged food. Prepackaged processed food also resist decay a whole lot better than fresh produce, so there isn't the losses there either for the wholesalers, and retailers.
So it should come as no surprise then that most people who make the switch to raw foods eventually come around to trying their hand at backyard gardening if they have the space to do it. What they all too often discover though, is that it's a learning experience, and their first efforts all too often just don't produce the amount of food they had anticipated. Then for those who decide to try their hand at organic gardening, the problems can become even more compound.
What you should know up front, is a more often than not the soil around a home is sorely lacking in several areas, and this is for reason. That reason is that when the lot was originally leveled in preparation for building, all the top soil was probably scraped away. Or if it didn't get scraped away by the lot grader the concrete contractor either scraped away or buried it when the foundation was installed. So you most probably have primarily clay, and rocks.
So as a result chances are that your soil, at the very minimum can use to have some quality loam soil conditioner worked into it and by far peat moss is the best choice out there. Now it's not the cheapest because there are some inexpensive soil conditioners you could buy. But before you consider what a bargain they are, you need to take into account that peat moss resists decay much better, so it will last years. Rent a Rototiller from your local rental yard for the job if you don't own one.
Then lack of adequate knowledge about the importance of soil pH is one of the common problems that throws a wrench into a lot of backyard Gardener gears. Acidic soil inhibits root growth, so you need to buy a soil test kit, check the pH number, and then use dolomite to bring it up to pH 7 which is neutral. When soil has a neutral pH it holds air better, soaks up water better, and plants roots thrive. Then even if you're going to go organic, use a good chemical fertilizer to eliminate pests on your lawn and in the landscaping surrounding the garden.
