It is understandable to have a mindset of choosing a car insurance provider that offers the lowest priced policy. Due to the fact that car insurance is a legal requirement in most states and how it has increased in cost these past few years certainly gave people every reason to focus primarily on price when they buy car insurance. However, you need to be careful since the lowest priced policy does not always offer the best deal, especially when you need to make a claim.
You need to understand that most low priced car insurance is most likely going to provide just third party cover. In other words, if you got involved in an accident where your car got damaged and the accident was your fault, you will not get any compensation for any financial loss as a result of repairs or replacement of your vehicle. If you own a car that has considerable value, perhaps you should consider getting a comprehensive car insurance policy.
Even if you have comprehensive insurance, there are still a few things you need to look out for. One of them is to appreciate the amount of excess you need to carry. This is practically the amount of the claim that you will responsible before the insurance firm will release any compensation. In general, the higher the amount of the excess, the lower the amount of the premium is. You need to do some balancing act there and determine the level of excess you will be comfortable with.
Other things you need to look at would include the protection against no claims discount, coverage for vandalism on your vehicle, risk on your no claims discount should you get hit by an uninsured driver, and availability of a hire vehicle while your car is currently being repaired.
You also need to be very accurate when it comes to giving out information to your insurance company. For instance, you might be requested to declare your annual mileage, and once you under-estimate and need to make a claim, it might be possible that the insurance firm will reduce your claim. The same is true if you try to under-estimate your vehicle's value.
It is important that you understand your needs so that the policy you will purchase will meet those needs rather than basing solely on the price. In your application form, make sure that all the information you declare to the insurance company is accurate.
