It's only natural that when people first meet that each one would like to know as much as they can about the other. Not only out of curiosity sake either because for instance a person you meet may in fact be trying to decide even at that initial introduction just how far they want to, or are willing to go with regards to an interpersonal relationship with you.

As an example, if it's a meeting on a professional level, say at work or at a work related meeting or perhaps a luncheon; people just don't like to make mistakes. Their job depends on it. So what modern people have done is develop ways of "sizing people up" or judging them on the spot in these initial introductions. How well you dress for instance, and also how well you speak.

Who can blame them either? Things just move so much faster in this new high speed information age, so people just don't have the time to be more in depth with regards to new acquaintances. They simply make their judgments on the fly, and leave it at that. It's just the way that people have adapted to survive in today's world.

Who you are, where you come from, and what you value just aren't going to be taken into account like they might have in the past. And in fact it gets even worse when it comes to the written word. The fact is that today a far greater percentage of the communication that takes place in both business and private, is done in writing. More than ever before.

So in the case of written messages, memos, notes, letters, etc the people that you communicate with have but one thing to judge you by, and that is your grammar. Simply put, they're going to see your English grammar skills and decide if you are a caring enough person to have learned them in the first place, and intelligent enough to use what you have learned.

So the bottom line is that when you write you want your grammar to be at least as good, if not better then the people that are reading it. When they read what you have written you want them to accept it as material that was created by someone who is both intelligent and caring so they will automatically, and without question accept your word as fact.
