In case you haven't noticed already, the facts about tanning beds and their safety can be a bit confusing to say the least. Watch one so-called expert speak on the topic on the net or TV, and he or she will tell you that they will give you skin cancer. Then watch yet another so-called expert on the topic talk, and you get a completely different story. "Go ahead and tan with them because the risk is overstated."

So then what about this risk of getting skin cancer? And also can the light waves penetrate below your skin to damage deep muscle tissues and even your body organs? The answer to the first question is "yes". Just like natural sun tanning, there is an increased risk of cancer from "prolonged exposure". Keep in mind though that the steady sun exposure that your arms receive while you're driving is probably greater over a lifetime.

Then what about the risk of internal organ damage? The simple answer to that is "no". There is no risk as long as you wear proper eye protection because that's really the only place on your body that the light can penetrate that deep. You see, Mother Nature has done a pretty good job of designing your skin because your skin does a fantastic job of blocking a lot of things out, including light waves.

Then what about the risk of catching STDs and other types of communicable diseases from beds at tanning salons? The answer to that is the same thing that was said about toilet seats for years. In the end though, it was all really just a convenient excuse for unfaithful lovers. The odds really are just so miniscule. Besides, any reputable and well-run tanning parlor will give the bed a good cleaning between uses.

The fact is that the germs that cause STDs die almost immediately once they're outside of the body. Just like so many other living things on the planet, they need a "warm and wet" environment to survive. Just the same though, you can always make a point of asking about salon beds cleaning policies, and also another idea is to bring some disinfectant wipes along with you in your bag to quickly wipe the bed down with.

So in the end, the bottom line is that indoor tanning, just like so many other things in your life, is really as risky as you make it. For sure your skin tone does factor in, with light skin being at a higher risk. Other than that though, you have control over so many of the risk factors that you may have heard about. Now "over tanning", whether it be indoors or outdoors definitely kicks up the risk level, and is something that really should be avoided.
