Most of us have witnessed the unthinkable on TV: a football star gets tackled on the field and suffers a horrible knee injury; a long distance runner plants his foot the wrong way and collapses with horrible knee pain; a basketball player jumps for the hoop and twists his knee when he lands, thus suffering a severe injury.
But what happens when the person suffering a horrible knee injury is not a professional athlete on TV?
What happens when the person suffering is you?
Let's face it: you don't have to be a football star or basketball player to run the risk of a knee injury. A person can suffer a horrible knee injury while doing simple, everyday activities, like climbing a ladder or running to catch the bus.
The question is, what do you do if it happens to you?
If you sustain any type of traumatic knee injury, the first thing to do is seek medical attention. The knee is one of the most sophisticated joints in the human body, and the structures within the knee are all interrelated. Damage to one structure can result in damage to others. For instance, if you suffer a horrible knee injury that results in a dislocated knee (i.e. where the knee cap is pulled out of place, and the upper leg bone becomes separated from the lower leg bone), damage can occur not only to the knee cap, but also to the muscles, ligaments and tendons that hold the joint together, as well as to the nerves and other vessels within the joint.
Only a qualified medical professional using proper diagnostic tools such as an x-ray or MRI, can determine the extent of the damage caused by a horrible knee injury. If your physician can assess your condition, the better off you will be, so it is important to seek medical attention as soon after an injury as possible.
The Role of Knee Braces : Knee braces can be helpful after a horrible injury because typically, after such a trauma, the joint has suffered some degree of damage and needs time to heal. Even if you are able to bear weight on the injured knee, you may need the extra support offered by the proper use of a knee brace. Further, if your injury involved any type of dislocation, a knee brace can help keep the joint properly aligned while the surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments are healing. A knee support can also help stabilize the knee; after a bad injury, there is bound to be some weakness in the knee, leaving you susceptible to additional injury. A knee support can offer additional stability to help keep you from reinjuring your weakened knee.
Last but not least, a knee brace can help give you the confidence to move around again. Sometimes, this factor alone can be the reason why individuals choose to use there knee supports; as a protective device.
