When taking your vehicle to a car repair garage it is important to understand the different capabilities and services modern garages can offer. Prior to the start of the twenty first century most cars were far simpler than they are today and relied less on electronics and systems such as fuel injection and because of this it was far easier for garages to offer generic repair services for most makes of vehicles. Mechanics traditionally tended to be jacks of all trades within the automotive world and could turn their hands to most types of mechanical repairs. In the modern world, virtually all vehicles use sophisticated electronics to control everything from engine management to drive train operation and because of these complex systems it has become a far more specialised task to maintain and repair vehicles correctly.
Manufacturers such as Mercedes (Smart Car), Audi, Volkswagen and BMW (Mini) provide mechanic training tailored to their specific cars. Mercedes for example offer a development and qualification path (DQP for short) for mechanics wishing to specialise in Mercedes Benz. The DQP has been developed with the understanding that technology is constantly changing in the modern world and this means that car mechanics are in a continual process of learning in order to keep their knowledge current. Mercedes breaks the role of the mechanic down into 'sub roles' which are maintenance, systems and diagnostic technicians. This shows us that the role of the modern mechanic is far more complicated and knowledge based with today's cars. BMW UK launched the BMW training academy, based in Berkshire, 17 years ago and this provides apprenticeships in service, bodyshop and parts as well as educational services for school children.
In addition to specialised, up to date mechanic training a garage should also possess the correct testing tools and workshop documentation. For example, Mercedes provide official Mercedes diagnostic equipment that can be garage based or mobile. Mobile diagnostics gives the mechanic the ability to come to your car in the event of a major electrical fault that immobilises your car for example. A garage that can provide manufacturer trained mechanics can safely maintain your manufacturer's warranty and also provide preventative maintenance in the form of regular manufacturer specific servicing and MOTs. Spare parts used in car repair by a reputable garage should be original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
If you need to get your Mercedes, Audi or BMW repaired, look for a garage with manufacturer trained mechanics with the understanding that today's vehicles are complex machines that require specialist knowledge, tools and treatment when dealt with.
