More and more companies are relying on road transport for their business, either for haulage, transporting goods, attending business meetings or reaching customers and accessing geographic areas needed for business.
Commercial vehicles are key for business in today's competitive market place, and therefore it is a priority for companies that rely on them to keep their commercial vehicle repairs down to a minimum and to remain as effective as possible. A vehicle off the road will inevitably mean a cost to the business, both in lost revenue and in additional commercial vehicle repair costs.
So what is the answer to keeping down costs and smooth running of your commercial vehicle fleet? Here are five tips that may help.
- Lower repair costs: Shop around for commercial vehicle repair prices. There will always be garages that offer loyalty discounts to customers who contract to them solely for lorry, truck and van repairs. You can also negotiate a lower price if you have a large volume of vehicles that need regular maintenance.
- Regular maintenance: If you own your own fleet, it's really important to have regular commercial vehicle repairs and servicing. A service will not only rectify any problems with the vehicle, it will also flag and highlight any potential mechanical and engine problems before they happen, which can ultimately save you trouble and money.
- Reputable garage: Make sure you get your commercial vehicle repairs carried out at a reputable garage, and if they are an approved garage, even better. They should only use genuine manufacturer parts and recommended lubricants. To get the best value, they should also be a one-stop shop and offer a full range of services, including electronic diagnostics and repairs, breakdown and recovery, MOT testing, LGV safety inspection and testing so that you are confident that they are providing your business with the best all-round service.
- Qualified technicians: As well as using a reputable garage, make sure the mechanics that are working on your fleet are just as good. They should be experienced in working on van and truck repairs, with light commercial vehicle experience, and/or HGV vehicles and preferably with formal qualifications. If technicians are picking up and dropping off your vehicles, make sure they hold the correct licence to drive your vehicles.
- Leasing commercial vehicles: If you currently own your commercial vehicles, is it worth considering leasing as an option? You could benefit operationally, get financial gains with VAT and tax depending on usage, no hassle of running and disposal of fleet vehicles and fixed costs. Leased vehicles will also save you time and trouble, as your van and truck repairs will be completely managed by the lease company. And if a vehicle is off the road due to breakdown and repair, you will get a substitute vehicle in its place, so your business can continue without interruption.
