Look around at the highly successful people you know. What can you say about their approach to their business or professionals? For sure some are very hard, diligent professionals that have taken the forks in the road and arrived at lucrative careers and practices. Take a close look however (and for good measure read about the highly successful entrepreneurs who have built ever-expanding, often global business) and you will find that they have learned the art of delegation. But how can I delegate a professional service, I hear you say? You delegate the things that absorb your non billing unproductive activities.
What activities can be delegated in a professional practice?
Anything that is repetitive and that a much lower paid assistant or person can do without much supervision or training.
It may seem too hard and not worth all the trouble (you do have to find someone you can entrust with a whole bunch of activities and you don't want to bogged down with the burden of fixing up their messes as well as the financial cost of a PA.)
It's not that delegation is impossible, it just seems that way to many business owners and self-employed professionals. It's the ultimate paradox: we go into business or work for ourselves in order to escape the tyranny of being a wage slave; to gain freedom and financial independence. Yet we insist on doing it all ourselves! Why?
There are many reasons (excuses really). Some include:
*I can do it better
*They'll screw it up
*It will take more time teaching them
*I'll lose control
*Working with people is a hassle
*I have to do it myself
The reality is that many things get done well, some things get done just okay and many things don't get done at all because we can't bear to have someone else do stuff for us! It's what Michael Gerber; author of the E-Myth refers to as the entrepreneurial seizure. We have this brilliant moment where we see the future and drive hard to establish a business only to find that we wear too many hats. Not only too many but hats that don't fit our heads.
How to find a VA
A Virtual Assistant is the contemporary, online version of the PA - the personal assistant. They can be located anywhere. In deed, with a highly competitive online marketplace for VA s (see www.guru.com as an example) it is possible that you secure a VA located in Sri Lanka or the midlands of England. This may be limiting for such activities as filing away paper but it is invaluable for such activities as:
*Research
*Writing briefs, quotes
*Sending submissions
*Filing articles, papers and topics of interest
*Preparing newsletters for clients.
The truth is that no business or practitioner can ever provide financial freedom to the business owner unless he or she learns to delegate. It is the cornerstone of what a business or successful practice should deliver: scalability. Think about all the E-books you could write and market. The prospective clients you could visit. The networking groups you could join.
It is scalability - leverage that brings revenues in the door. Not revenues based on your efforts but revenues that are based on a system that can be duplicated many times over.
You want more income? Learn to delegate. Learn the Value of a VA and the first base to learning how to delegate.
It's a great journey. Start now!
