A lot of Internet marketers are so preoccupied with the challenge of building traffic that they have not stopped to think about how effective their website is as a sales medium. If you aren’t planning to launch a new business website, make sure you take the time to consider how to design a web site that sells. On the other hand, if you already have a website up and running but are not achieving satisfactory results with it, now would be a good time to step back and cast a critical eye over your site to see how you can improve it.

The improvements that you need to make are easy to implement once you know what they are. None of them requires high-tech solutions. What it comes down to is something as simple and compelling as the words you use and the way you present them on the page. The first thing you will want to do is avoid some of the most common pitfalls that people fall into when they make a business Internet site. So here are a few questions for you to consider about your website:

Does your website look like a sales site? If so, maybe you should change it.
How many banner ads are showing on each of your web pages? If the answer is more than one or two, it may be too many.
How formal and impersonal is your web copy? Is your website copy stuffy and full of jargon? It shouldn’t be.
Do you use your own name and photograph to introduce yourself to your visitors? If not, why not?
Do you really think your visitors are going to hang around to watch a flash movie introduction?
Are you trying to sell to your visitors before you have won their trust?

Those questions are designed to help you see things from your visitors point of view. You will need to keep your visitors in mind when you start to write your web copy. Here are some pointers to making your copy more effectively engage with your visitors:

Make your copy easy for visitors to scan.
Don’t write dense paragraphs full of long sentences.
Use bullet points and numbered lists.
Address your visitors directly by using the words “you”, “your” and “you’re”.
Use conversational English.
Use “don’t” instead of “do not” and don’t be afraid to use in formal, idiomatic English.
Use as strong headline.
Write in an editorial style. Product reviews work better than blatant sales pitches.
Placing keywords in bold helps visitors as well as search engine spiders to scan your page.
Split up your copy into manageable portions by using subheadings.
Use a large, clear font.
Use wide margins and plenty of white space.
Always include a panel where your visitors can sign up for your newsletter.

Encourage them to do this by offering a free report. The best kind of report is one that you have written yourself, as this will add to your credibility and also be a unique product which your visitors cannot get anywhere else. You can gently promote your website sales pages in your free report, but make sure you also provide a lot of quality content. With this strategy, you will be able to build your list and sell via your e-mail newsletter.

I have touched on just a few of the essentials that you need to put in place if your website is to be a more effective moneyspinner for you. As you can see, most of the points are actually quite easy to implement. Yet, it is amazing how few people actually take steps towards building a website that sells.
