The Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh tells a story about belief. A peasant returns home to find his home has been pillaged and burned to the ground. He discovers the remains of a young boy he thinks are his son's.

He doesn't realize his son's been kidnapped and is still alive. The father is grief-stricken and puts the ashes into a bag and keeps them under his bed. He is inconsolable and doesn't leave his new home.

One day, the son escapes and knocks on the father's door. "It's me, your son!" he cries when the father asks who is there. "Go away, my son is dead. I have his ashes here," replies the father. The son persists, but the father refuses to believe him, thinking this is a cruel joke. The son leaves, never seeing his father again. The father holds onto the bag of ashes.

So what beliefs and perceptions do we hang on to that keep us from opening the door to reality?

I Told You I Was Sick

There's a grave in Key West, Florida with an inscription on the headstone that says, "I told you I was sick". It belonged to a notorious hypochondriac who lived a fairly long life. If you are holding fast to a certain belief, that will be your reality, eventually.

I was so sure at one time that I wouldn't get a job I really wanted, that when I did get the job, I was convinced that it was a mistake and that I would lose it. Ten years later, when I lost the job I felt that at last I was vindicated. Meanwhile, I didn't really experience how wonderful the job was!

Opening the Door

Accept that your mind is powerful and go from there. Take stock of what's in your brain and what's useful and what you can toss. Put pen to paper and take a serious look.

- What would it be like if you were convinced that you were wealthy, and that you would continue to attract wealth? What does your life look like?

- List some beliefs that are keeping the door closed to your reality, which is wealth. Those belief statements begin with "I'm afraid?" "I can't?" or "I'll never?" for example.

- Make a gratitude list every night before bed. This will alert you to the riches you have already, and will direct your energy towards what is coming to you.

The practice of real humility is to see and accept what is and to recognize that you do have that power to change your own mind. No one else can break in and do it for you.

What would it have been like if the father had taken a chance and opened the door, seen that his child had really survived? Who really limited his life...and who is limiting yours?
