As disturbing as it might be to the rest of us, criminals actively seek out victims who are less capable of defending themselves in an attack. Unfortunately this leaves our seniors, physically challenged and youth more vulnerable to an assault. There are ways for these members of society to protect themselves and increase the odds in their favor should they face a perpetrator intent on committing a criminal act. As more and more people realize the need for personal safety devices and other forms of self defense, the likelihood of surviving an attack increase. Here we will look at a few self defense methods for seniors which add a level of security for our elderly friends and family members.
* Self defense classes- Seniors like every other age group can benefit from self defense classes. Each person is different but as a general rule we all lose strength and agility as we age. Consider classes that are specifically designed with seniors in mind as self defense methods that work for people in their 20's and 30's will likely not be as effective when practiced by a person in their 60's or 70's. Today many seniors can take cane "fighting" classes which teach students who walk with a cane how to use that cane to defend themselves in an attack. Remember it is always best to avoid a physical confrontation whenever possible but it is also better to know how to use a cane to defend yourself versus having it used as a weapon against you.
* Look less vulnerable- Criminals are basically people looking to make a buck as quickly and easily as possible. This means they are looking for "marks" that offer the most to gain with the least resistance. Elderly citizens should avoid looking the part by presenting a confident appearance. Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid carrying too many bags or packages which could render you unable to defend yourself in an attack. Walk with purpose when you are out and about; if you appear unafraid and confident potential attackers will think twice before considering you their next victim.
* Carry personal safety devices- There are dozens of different products on the market today which can be carried on your person and offer a definite advantage should you find yourself in a less than favorable situation. Visit websites that sell these products to see what items are available. Many personal safety devices are safe for everyone to use regardless of age and provide potential victims the few seconds needed to escape an attack and seek help.
It is unfortunate that our elderly have to worry about being the victims of an attack. The tips mentioned here are just a few of the things a person can do to increase the safety or themselves or loved ones.
