In any profession, a person's work is only as good as the tools they are using. This is the same for ballet. A dancer's performance can be greatly influenced by their shoes. A good pair that fits well will help with a dancer's technique. They will feel a natural flow when dancing. Bad shoes that do not fit properly will slow down even an advanced dancer. Ballet shoes are also a part of the dancer's safety. A poor fit and worn soles can cause falls. Knowing a few basic tips can help you find the best shoes for your feet. Try on several different brands of ballet shoes. They come in a variety of prices.
The fit of the shoe is extremely important. Start with the size you wear in street shoes. Ballet shoes should fit like a second skin, but not be too small. The toes should be able to move. When trying on the shoes, stand up on the balls of your feet. You should still be able to move your toes, and the heel should not be slipping off. If you are torn between two sizes, it is best to go with the bigger one. Don't count on stretch. This can be minimal in many ballet shoes.
The materials the shoes are made of can be leather or canvas. It is personal preference which you choose. Leather is usually more expensive, but it is more durable than canvas. They are tougher, and they feel cooler on the feet. Leather is best for wooden floors. They look more elegant than canvas, but many dancers prefer canvas. The canvas shoes are easy to keep clean. They are machine washable. They are better for heavier dancers, and they work well on vinyl floors. The sole of the shoe can be full or split. Full sole shoes are less expensive. They look the most like pointe shoes.
Full soles are recommended for beginners and children. Split soles are split between the toe and heel to allow more movement. This will make the foot look better when pointed because it clings to the arch. The elastics secure the shoe to the foot. These normally come separate. You will sew them on yourself, according to where your arch is. Some ballet shoes may already have them sewn in. Make sure they hold the shoe on properly. Ribbons are used for more advanced dancers.
