Tutu skirts and tutus offer opportunities to design fantastic dance performances. Tutu Skirts are sold in several lengths which make them even more conventional to costume planning. These are available in single and multi-layers in lengths just above the knee to ankle-length. They provide a basic design for ballet, modern dance and jazz dance routines. The first step to costume your dance performance quickly using tutu skirts is to relate it to the choreography. For a romantic ballet, like Coppelia, this requires only the addition of a delicate pastel leotard.
This method also applies to modern dance routines where simple black leotards, bare legs and feet and an ankle-length tutu skirt complete the costume design. Stage lighting for your dance performances affects visual images the tutu skirt creates. A simple white costume with an over-the-knee length tutu skirt will become an ethereal vision with the proper stage lighting. The same is true of a blue tutu skirt for a jazz/ballet performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. For jazz routines, a shorter length tutu skirt makes a wonderful accompaniment for choreography that accents a certain era in dance or a specific style of jazz dance such as Fosse choreography.
Create A Rainbow Effect Using Tutu Skirts. Work up a choreographed dance routine for ballet by using multiple colors of tutu skirts instead of a single color for each dancer's costume. This is an opportunity for the choreographer to design a visual effect that makes dance performances appear more complex. Tutu skirts in vivid colors like cerise, dayglo lime or orange make dance performances more dramatic and the visual effect stunning for jazz routines that need to make a color statement and correlate with lighting and choreography. Use a leotard as the base in a contrasting color. Then, add a few accessories or props to make the dance performance stand out.
Accessorize The Tutu Skirt. It's simple to accessorize a tutu skirt. For jazz routines, add a row of long silk fringe. Use a simple basting stitch to attach the fringe. This can also be done with metallic hula skirts. These are easier to attach if the hula skirt has a tie-on waistband or a waistband pre-sewn to the metallic fringe. "Winterize" a tutu skirt by sewing fur boas to the waistband and at the hemline. This looks great for those dance performances with a winter theme. One dazzling effect is to sew sequin bands to the waist and hemline.
