In today's challenging economic times, learning to budget efficiently is more important than ever before. Although some people automatically think of budgeting as a rather hum-drum experience, it can actually be somewhat fun if you work together on it as a family. When you work together, it will give everyone a sense of helping out with the family expenses. You might be surprised at how many good budgeting ideas you will get from your children, even if they are quite young. If you have been intending to get a good family budget in place, here are some tips you can use to make it an enjoyable family activity.
Call A Family Meeting
Before you embark on a family budget, it can be helpful to call everyone together for a meeting. Although sometimes parents feel as though they should protect their children from the realities of family finances, this attempt at protection can sometimes backfire. Children seem to have an innate ability to sense when something is bothering or worrying their parents. If you are worried about the family budget, your children have probably already noticed something is not quite right. Unfortunately, children often imagine that the problems are much worse than they really are. If you call a family meeting and let them know that the family needs to find ways to save money, they will probably actually be relieved to know. Of course, you do not need to tell your children all the details. Simply let them know that you are calling a meeting so that everyone can discuss ways that the family can save money.
Involve Everyone
It is important to remember that everyone may have good ideas, even small children. Give everyone a chance to share their ideas, and be open to trying any ideas that are suggested. For example, if your child has recently learned about the environmental advantages of recycling, he or she might suggest starting a family recycling project to save on trash pickup costs, or even to make some extra spending money. Or, there might be a suggestion to have a garage sale. In order to get everyone involved, try out as many ideas as you can. After all, even if you do not save a lot of money, it can still be a good way to have fun as a family. As you try out some of these ideas, take photos of the family working together. Keeping a scrapbook or displaying some of the photos in collage picture frames can be a great way to remember the good times you had together.
Easy Budget Tips
In addition to the ideas that your family members come up with, there are a few basic budgeting tips to keep in mind. Whenever possible, pack lunches instead of eating out. Although it can be fun to shop for new items and clothing, many times you can find things that are just as nice at second-hand shops, flea markets and even garage sales. Have everyone save their pocket change in a piggy bank. Then, when it is full, empty it and use the proceeds to take everyone out for ice cream or to see a matinee movie. Be sure to take a few photos, since they can be fun to display in wood picture frames as a reminder of how well the family is working together to save money.
