Does your child love to take pictures? Sure, you have photo albums filled with pictures that you have taken of your child, but now the tables are turning on you - your child wants to be the family's photographer! Many kids like to play around with their parent's digital cameras. Photography nurtures your child's creative abilities, and if your child particularly enjoys snapping photographs of friends, family, his feet, the dog, and other subjects, then it may be time to consider buying him his own digital camera. Fortunately, there are some pretty good digital cameras out there that are durable enough for a child's rigorous use and abuse that don't cost an arm and a leg.

Children develop on their own schedule, and some kids are more naturally adept to photography than others. Nonetheless, children tend to be mesmerized by digital cameras, and taking pictures can be a lot of fun. You may be surprised when the shots your child ends up with are good enough to fill those empty photo albums you have been storing away. The tips that follow will help you pick out the right digital camera for your child, based on the child's age.

• Toddler through the early grades of elementary school. At this stage, kids like to turn the camera on and then off again on their own. They like to see the cause-and-effect that happens when they push a button, and they love to see things on the LCD display of the camera. They also like to see themselves in pictures and to imitate the actions of the most important folks in their lives - their parents. At this age, you can expect more pictures of the floor or the ceiling than anything else, or a bunch of shots of one thing in particular, like a favorite toy or pet. When choosing a digital camera for a child this age, it boils down to sturdy construction. Expect the camera to be thrown around like a toy because that is what it will be to a child this age. The camera should be completely automatic, including the focus and the flash, and should have the storage capacity to store a lot of pictures.

• Early grades of elementary school through middle school grades. Children of this age are a bit more technologically advanced. In fact, your child at this age may know more about cameras than you do. At this age, kids are interested in capturing photos of their favorite people, places, and things, and filling up photo albums that will preserve their memories forever. It is at this age that many kids begin to take photography seriously, and they may use the photos that they take for scrapbooking, journals, and more. Look for a digital camera for a child of this age that is sturdy but still inexpensive, in case it is damaged, stolen, or forgotten somewhere. Look for a fashion-forward looking camera that the child would be proud to show off, and that has an automated flash.

• High school and older kids. Once a child has made it to high school, he or she is pretty much ready to move up to a camera that is almost as high quality as mom or dad's, but still not the most expensive camera on the market. Teens are still forgetful, and many of them don't have the responsibility to care for a really expensive camera. There are wonderful digital cameras on the market, however, that cost less than $100 and that shoot in excellent resolution. Look for a digital camera for the older teen that has an expandable memory and that looks like something an adult would want.
