Whether you are driving to a distant vacation destination or just taking a quick drive down to the neighborhood store, car games can be a great way to pass the time. Children can often get quite bored when riding in a car, which can cause them to become restless or even misbehave. Playing games while driving can be a great way to entertain children and keep them occupied. Here are a few games you can try playing the next time you take a car trip.
Car Blockout
This classic game is always a fun one for children to play. You can purchase car blockout cards, which are handy to keep in the car for quick impromptu games. Of course, you can also make your own car blockout cards. Simply draw a blockout grid onto a piece of paper. Draw a "free" square in the center. Then draw small pictures of objects that are commonly seen while driving in the car, such as a railroad crossing sign, traffic light, stop sign, cow or a certain color car. If you do not have a lot of artistic talent, you could find small pictures of these objects in a magazine, cut them out, and glue them into the squares. You could also design your blockout card using a graphics or word processing program on your computer, utilizing clip art instead of drawings. Create a few different versions of your card, adding different pictures and placing them in different positions on the cards. Then, use a photocopy machine to make numerous copies of your cards. Give each child a card and a sheet of small stickers. As they spot an item, they can simply cover the picture with a sticker. If you're going on a short trip, declare the first child to complete a diagonal, vertical or horizontal row as the winner. However, on longer car trips you can extend the length of the game by requiring the entire card to be filled. It can also be fun to have an appropriately sized 5x7 picture frame at home that you can use to display the winner's blockout card. Then, every time you take a car trip, each child will have a chance to win the game and have their card displayed in the "frame of honor" when you get home.
Alphabet Photo Tag
For children who are old enough to operate a digital camera, alphabet photo tag can be a lot of fun. Give each child an inexpensive digital camera to use. Then, have them take photos of objects, people or animals that they see as they travel - one photo for each letter of the alphabet. Decide in advance if the game rules state that the photos have to be taken in the same order as the alphabet, or if they can be taken in random order. The first person to successfully take all their photos to complete the alphabet wins the game. One added benefit of this game is the number of interesting vacation photos you will have, some of which may be nice enough to display in ornate picture frames when you return home.
So, next time you go on a road trip, make sure you try out some fun games to make the time go faster. Everyone will enjoy themselves, and you won't be hearing "are we there yet"!
