Learning about charity and the importance of giving is a lesson that all children should learn. Not only can it help them realize how important it is to help take care of those who are less fortunate, but it can also help them develop a good appreciation for how fortunate they really are. Children who learn about charity and the importance of giving early in life generally grow into adults who have respect and empathy for other people. In addition to teaching them important life lessons, charity can also help children feel good about themselves. After all, think about how good you feel when you are able to help someone else. If you have been looking for some ways to help your child learn about charity, here are couple ideas to help get you started.

Toy Donation

Since most children have more toys than they really play with, donating a few to charity is a great way to help teach them about the importance of giving. Start by telling your child about the many children who do not have many toys to play with. Reading a book on the subject, or looking through the newspaper or magazines for stories about people in need can be a good way to increase your child's awareness. You might also take a short trip to a charitable organization in your neighborhood, or perhaps to a nearby Goodwill or Salvation Army store. Then, ask your child if they would like to donate a few of their toys to children who do not have anything to play with. You might be surprised at how generous your child suddenly becomes. Once you have a few toys to donate, take your child to the donation site, and let them present their toys personally. You might even want to take a few photos of their act of generosity, so that you can display them in collage picture frames when you get home. It is sure to be an experience that your child will remember, and it may just inspire them to donate unused toys on a more regular basis.

The Gift Of Time

Although many people automatically think of money and personal possessions when they think of the concept of giving, it is also important to remember the value of time. After all, sometimes the most important thing you can give another person is just a little bit of your time. Spending time with their grandparents or perhaps a shut-in relative can be a great way of bringing a bit of joy to the life of your child as well as to the person they are visiting. Visiting people in a nursing home can also be a great way of showing your child the value of giving a bit of their time. You could plan a few activities for the visit, such as bringing along a coloring book and some crayons, or just allow your child to talk and visit. Take a couple photos so that your child can display them in pretty triple picture frames as a reminder of their day. When you get home, talk to your child about how happy the other person was to see them, and how good it felt to bring a bit of joy into the other person's life.

You'll find that though these charitable tips may be simple, they can have a large effect on someone's life.
