Whether they are of family, friends, pets, or places, everyone has photographs; many in picture frames. Your photographs give you a great opportunity to show them off in a personal collection display. As with all other home decorating projects, there are a few rules, or tips, for the best ways to show off your personal photographs.
Groupings
Whatever room you decide to display your pictures in, put them all together in one place. On an end table or a pair of end tables, on a piano, on a credenza or sofa table are all great photo display areas. Do not spread them out throughout your space.
A small display of favorite or very personal photos that you like to see all the time makes a great bedside table or dresser-top display.
You should always avoid having the back sides of picture frames from being seen, so never place them on display on a coffee table. Walking into a room and seeing the backs of the frames is simply unattractive to look at.
Matching
Photographs that are displayed together should always be framed in the same material - wood, brass, steel, pewter, or all silver plated wood picture frames. For a more formal look in a traditional home, stick with silver or simple brass picture frames. In a modern home wood, steel, or handmade pewter picture frames work well. As a guide, look at the other metal finishes that you have in your room.
In general, all photographs that are in a grouping should be either color photos or black and white, regardless of the subject matter. If you have old sepia photos, either display them on their own or group them in with your black and white photos.
Large Pictures
The largest picture frames should always be kept at the back of the display and the smallest ones at the front so that all the photographs can be seen; this is simply common sense, but still worth mentioning.
Large photos should be hung instead of displayed on a tabletop; it simply looks better. In a family room or den, the space above a sofa would make a perfect spot for hanging large family photographs. Hang a nice grouping on the wall behind the sofa, following the same rules that you would for hanging any artwork. Three larger vertical frames, hung in a row is a nice above-the-sofa display, or choose a display that is more appropriate to your space or personal tastes.
Wall Units
Wall units can be as detailed or as plain as you like and they can be a great place to display a group of personal photographs. If you have more than a couple open shelves, use one or two to display books - but not two shelves that are adjacent (to the side or up/down) because your balance could be thrown off - and your collection of framed family photos or fun vacation photos can occupy the other shelves, along with favorite objects that are appropriate for display in the space.
Hopefully this article has helped you get some helpful tips on how you can best showcase your favorite photos so you can enjoy them for many years to come.
