Creating a family library is a great way to get everyone's books organized. It is also a good way to increase your children's appreciation of reading, since having a library will reinforce how important books are within your household. Whether you have a spare bedroom that you can devote to the project, or simply a bookcase in the family room, creating a library in your home can be a worthwhile project that everyone can enjoy. Here are some tips you can use to help create your own family library.

Gathering Your Books

Many times the most difficult part of creating a family library is simply gathering everyone's books together. Because most people have books stored in many locations around the house, it often takes a bit of effort to gather them all together in one place. Collecting all of your books ahead of time is important, since the number of books you have will determine how much shelf space you will need. Ask everyone in the family to bring their books to a central location, even if they are currently reading them. Once you have all the books in one place, you will be able to plan the best way to display them.

Categorizing Your Books

There's really no right or wrong way to categorize your books. For example, while some families prefer to organize their books alphabetically, others prefer to divide them by author or subject matter. If you have devoted an entire room or at least several bookshelves to your library, you could find photos or clip art that represent these categories, placing them in wood picture frames. Then, mount these on the shelves or on the wall nearby, so that everyone can easily see where the various categories or books are located. This can be quite useful for children's libraries, especially for children who are not yet proficient readers. You might want to create a separate bookshelf for children's books, especially for younger readers. Or, use the lower shelves of a full-height bookshelf for children's books. Either way, it can be fun to decorate the children's section of the library. Find photos that are related to reading or themed artwork that represents one or more of your child's favorite books. Then, display in a picture frame and hang on the walls. By making the library colorful and attractive, your child will undoubtedly be more interested.

Using the Family Library

Once you have your books in place, you will want to make sure everyone knows how to use the library. If you have gone to a lot of effort to get the books categorized, you will probably want to provide everyone with instructions on how to keep them that way. You might even want to come up with a few simple rules for how the library is to be used. For an added touch of fun, create a library sign using your computer, along with any family rules. Display these signs in picture frames on the library walls, so that everyone can review the guidelines if necessary.

Creating a family library is simple and fun, and will also be beneficial to the whole family.
