Creating finger food snacks for children can be a great way to expand their appreciation for healthy foods. Too many times children get in the habit of eating foods that are not healthy, simply because they are fun and easy to eat. Instead of allowing your child to develop bad eating habits, why not show them how they can make some of their own fun finger foods? Even if your child is too young to make these snacks on their own, they can still enjoy eating them. You will probably even find that you will enjoy eating these fun and tasty snacks too. Here are a few ideas to help give your culinary creativity a boost.
Celery and Carrot Snack Nibblers
Even children who say they do not like vegetables will enjoy these crispy little snack sticks. Start by washing carrots and celery stalks. Peel, and cut into easy to hold strips. Children often like these best if they are long and thin. If your child truly doesn't like celery or carrots, you could substitute any other crispy raw vegetable. Gather together an assortment of small plastic containers, such as clean yogurt containers or Dixie cups. Into each cup, add either a dipping sauce or a type of sprinkle. For example, peanut butter, fruit-flavored yogurt, apple butter, sugar-free jam, raisins, sesame seeds, or soybeans are all delicious and nutritious choices. Your child can dip the vegetable stick into a dipping sauce, then into one of the sprinkles. The end result is a delicious snack that is fun to eat and healthy. Take a few photos of your children making and eating their healthy creations, placing them in picture frames as kitchen decorations.
Cracker Critters
If your child is interested in insects, making these cute but somewhat creepy cracker critters will be a lot of fun. Start by spreading peanut butter on some round snack crackers, topping them with a second cracker. Cut some red licorice laces into pieces that are long enough to form legs on the crackers. Your child will be pulling off the top cracker, securing the licorice lace pieces in the peanut butter to form legs. Then, they can replace the top cracker to form the critter. So, be sure to cut the licorice lace pieces long enough to allow for proper assembly. Provide a little bowl of peanut butter as well, along with some mini chocolate chips, raisins, sunflower seeds, or maybe other small foods to make into the critter's eyes. Give these supplies to your child, and let the fun begin. Take a few photos of your child's most creative cracker critter creations, since they can be a lot of fun to display in picture frames.
Crouton Art
A simple bag of plain dry bread croutons can be enough to keep a child entertained for hours. By using these little cubes as construction bricks, he or she can use peanut butter "mortar" to create spectacular and yet edible architectural masterpieces. When finished, your child can either eat the results, or simply leave it on display for all to admire. Be sure to take a few photos of your child's crouton creation, and display them on your child's bedroom wall in picture frames as a reminder of their bread cube building career.
When your children try out these fun snacks, they will not only enjoy healthy foods, but have fun eating them as well.
