Playing outdoors has always been a favorite activity for children, regardless of what the weather is like. After all, it can be a lot of fun to play in the snow or splash around in some puddles after it rains. Although children can usually come up with plenty of ideas for outdoor fun on their own, it can also be a good idea to give your children a few new outdoor games to play from time to time. Not only will this increase their enjoyment of outdoor play, but it will help them come up with new and creative game ideas on their own. Here are a couple of ideas for great outdoor games that your child will really enjoy.
Nature Detective
Even if there aren't any other children outside to play with, a good game of nature detective can be a lot of fun. All you need to do is think of an object outside as the "target," and come up with a variety of clues that your child can use to help discover that object. For example, if you determine the target to be a bed of flowers in the backyard, you could provide your child with clues such as "It's the honeybee's breakfast table" or "It's full of red, pink and yellow colors." If you have a bit more time, you could even turn the detective game into a bit of a scavenger hunt, by hiding several clues around the yard. Give your child the first clue that they can use to find the second one, and so on. Although it can take a bit more planning than your average game of hide and seek, it is a game that your child will certainly enjoy. Take a few photos of your budding detective so that you can display them in medium oval picture frames as mementos.
Playing Tag
If you have more than one child, or if your child plays with other children in the neighborhood, tag is always a fun classic game. Fortunately, this game never seems to get old, probably because there can be so many different variations which can be added. If your child seems a little bored with the same old tag games, help him or her come up with new and exciting options. For example, create different "safe" areas around the yard, possibly with different point values associated with them. For example, if they can get to the back porch without getting tagged, they are awarded three points. The goal of the game could be to see how many points each child can accumulate. You could also put funny rules into play, such as requiring kids to crawl on the ground in order to tag each other. Children are often extremely amused by funny rules, and one rule will likely inspire them to come up with a lot more silly rules on their own. As a result, a simple game of tag could become the inspiration for an entire afternoon of play. Be sure to take a few photos, since when displayed in simple photo frames around your home, they can be quite cute and funny.
Whether your child is looking for something to play on their own or they have friends to play with, there are many simple but fun games you can suggest to make a fun afternoon.
