You hear a lot these days about "family time" and how important it is to spend "quality time" with your family. Sometimes people seem to think that you have to make a lot of complicated plans in order to make the most of the time you spend with your family. Although planned events are certainly special and can be a nice way to spend time together, it is also important to remember that impromptu events and casual activities can be the source of treasured family memories. Here are some tips you can use to help make the most of the family time you spend together, even if you do not always have time to plan special events.

Family-Friendly Car Trips

Years ago, it was common for families to take car rides together, simply to enjoy the scenery, visit relatives, or participate in some other inexpensive and yet enjoyable activity. In today's busy world, this family-friendly habit has become less common. Relive the past by simply taking a short trip together as a family, perhaps once a month or even once a week. You can plan an event in advance, or simply get in the car and see where you end up. Neighborhood parks, flea markets, festivals and community events, and museums are all interesting destinations, most of which are completely free. Pack a picnic lunch in a cooler and hit the road for a day of enjoyable family fun. Be sure to take your camera with you so you can take photos of the sights you see, as well as a few photos of your family enjoying time together. Display a few of these photos in vintage picture frames once you return home as a reminder of your trip.

Family Game Night

Playing games together as a family is another free activity that everyone will enjoy. In fact, some families schedule a weekly game night, allowing a different family member to select the game to be played each week. You can prepare inexpensive finger food snacks, make a pitcher of lemonade or a pot of hot cocoa, and just enjoy spending time as a family. Make sure to select games that everyone can play, so you don't leave anybody out. If you have children of varying ages, you can also schedule two separate games to be played, one for the younger children and one for the adults and older children.

Enjoy Nature Together

Spending time outdoors is a great way to combine exercise and quality family time. A walk through the park, an afternoon of rock hunting, or even bird watching in your own backyard can be a lot of fun. Take your camera with you so that you can take some great nature shots or photos of your family spending time together, so you can pop a few in natural wood picture frames when you get home. You will have a great time spending time together, without the need for a lot of planning or expense.

It doesn't take much money or planning to make the time with your family a time that really counts, and that your whole family will always remember.
